Captain Marvel Movie Review

So we would know why her costume colour was changed.

Captain Marvel is the most awaited movie before we see her fight against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. She is believed to be the strongest hero in the Marvel Universe since Fury called her via a special pager at the post credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War. While introducing her origin and abilities, for me this movie is the decent prequel of The Avengers movies.

The movie introduces our heroine, firstly known as Vers, as a star force member of Kree Empire. She woke up after a repeating dream of her in an unknown shootout which is believed to be her past memory. She had a hidden power that her mentor kinda not allow to use it in uncontrolled manner. This premise also put Vers as a woman force who has to control her emotion throughout the story. She and her force was on a mission to rescue one of their ally, but then Vers was caught by Skrulls, a group of shapeshifter aliens. With an expected amount of effort, finally she was able to escape and fell at a Blockbuster shop. And then the real story of Vers discovering her true identity was begun, and also little about Fury’s and SHIELD’s past.

Captain Marvel quite successfully in illustrate the 90’s of its universe. It’s glad to see the movie bring back the Blockbuster shop, classic payphone, and an ancient Google-like website. Hence there hadn’t been a supercomputer or AI that helped our heroine to fully discover her past, only a compact archive of U.S. Air Force documentation. However this 90’s setting gave a decent ride to discover the real truth about Vers’ past and origin of her power, also her real name, Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot.

The MCU movies always give unexpected plots that never been exposed at each of their trailers. In the same time, they also give an enough answer to the most awaited plot from the Universe. In Captain Marvel’s case, finally it explained how Fury met Carol Danvers as the first superhero he met at the MCU. Another expected plot is how Carol Danvers who is an Earth pilot could became a Kree force, along with the origin of her superpower. In addition, the movie revealed what really happened to Fury’s left eye and why Carol’s costume is turned into a red-blue costume, in a very unexpected way. Seriously, the Fury’s left eye blinding process is a plot twist of the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Similar with the previous movies, role of some characters were twisted in the movie. We would identify the protagonists and antagonists right after our heroine found out the truth about her past completely. We would also have a little reunion with an old enemy who died some movies ago and the most famous infinity stone, Tesseract. There was also an extra explanation why the Tesseract is finally put on the Earth. Talking about the characters, if Ant Man has Cassie as the lovable side character, then Captain Marvel has Goose, a lovely cat which its appearance amused and un-thrill the audiences enough.

Goose, the show stealer
Goose deserves a franchise.

The story put enough parts to develop Carol’s characters. However all of the battle scenes throughout the movie are not spectacular enough. Of course it’s due to the fact that our heroine is too powerful and we all know that she won’t have significant difficulty throughout the movie, unlike T’Chaka who almost died in his own movie. In addition, it’s reasonable because Captain Marvel is set to be a warm up movie for Avengers: Endgame. Hence any spectacular and mind-blowing battles are saved for the upcoming Avengers movie, with Captain Marvel in it. That’s also the reason why Fury just request for her help after Thanos did his masterplan.

This movie, which finally explains where Captain Marvel has been since the aftermath of Infinity War, has elaborated its story well although doesn’t have any real thrilling battle scenes. Finally I rated this movie 7 of 10 for cleverly completed some plots of The Avengers timeline.
