After seeing first 15 seconds of this movie’s trailer, I could expect that Ready or Not would deliver a romantic comedy about Grace, who just married Alex, the youngest son from a rich family. However, the continuation of the trailer hints a thrilling event that will happen to Grace instead, as told well by the poster. Ready or Not is a thrilling movie with full of guns and bloods, but somehow the story is fun to follow. Thus, this movie delivers another unexpected blending genre this year.
Ready or Not, indeed tells about the first night of Alex’s and Grace’s marriage. Alex is an estranged son from a wealthy Le Domas family while Grace is an ordinary woman raised in foster house. At their marriage scene, our question for the next plot should be whether Grace will be ready to be a part of the wealthy family? However, at midnight, Grace had to participated an unorthodox family initiation, playing game with the other family members. Grace drew a card from the prepared wooden box to select the game they had to play, where she drew “Hide and Seek”. That means Grace had to hide inside the house and the other family members had to hunt her before the sunrise, seriously had to get her killed. They had to play the game to carry on the tradition agreed by the great-grandfather Victor Le Domas and a man called Mr. Le Bail. Alex who really loves Grace was in dilemma to participate in the game or help his wife to escape from the estate. That’s because he and his brother, Daniel really know what happened at the last “Hide and Seek” game they were playing at their childhood, that’s when the whole family hunted and killed their aunt’s new husband. However, it’s not easy for the family to catch Grace in their own house.
This movie has the focused setting, at the midnight in the Le Domas estate, which helps the story to be more straightforward. Therefore, the scope of the story only about their running “family tradition”, which isn’t expanded with the story about Grace’s background or how famous the business run by Le Domas family for instance. Here, Le Domas family is only described as a successful board-game creator. The movie fortunately gives a brief resolution to the end of the “Hide and Seek” game that the family played about 30 years ago, which is told at the beginning of the movie. However, the movie didn’t explore another interesting point such as what happened if the new family member chose easier game, such as chess. The movie just showed that there is a family member who survived because she played a safer game. In addition, there is an interesting dialog from aunt Helene which stated that Grace could step up to be the family leader, but isn’t elaborated further.
Samara Weaving is very successful in giving a role of Grace who attempted to save her life all the night. She played the not-that-kind woman effortlessly since the wedding scene. At the wedding scene, she wore a fancy white dress, became the new rich woman in the neighbourhood. But who knows that with the same dress, she could still play as a tough woman since the scene where she torn the dress to improve her mobility. Along with her, we could really feel how exhausted and hurt she was during her runaway. The detailed scenes that taken to support the plot are also convincing, e.g. that sharp fence pattern.

What makes this movie enjoyable besides Grace’s runaway scenes is its comedy aspect. I laughed several times when the movie showed the other family did a silly reaction to the happened unexpected thing, for example when Alex’s sister shot the wrong target. The funny dialogs reflect how panic the family is if they’re failed to kill Grace before morning. We could understand that they are afraid of the awaiting curse since they’re believe it’s either the whole family or only Grace, who have to die at the morning. However, when the movie describe this aspect (fear of failure – red), it delivers the inconsistency to some of the characters, toward they thought to the “family tradition”. The funniest part of the movie is the start of the bloody ending scene, which is preceded by some character twists before. And to complete the ending, the movie is closed by a classic but gold “get out of the house” scene. Another credit for the shooting department of this movie.
While watching this movie, I felt like I was watching Crazy Rich Asians at the beginning but turned to be like The Cabin in the Woods at the end. Finally, I gave 6.5 of 10 points for this unexpected movie. For me, Ready or Not is quite recommended for those who want to watch a thrilling movie which is packaged in an entertaining (in the meaning of can make laugh) way.
