Saatnya saya sedikit mundur untuk membahas salah satu film dari tahun lalu yang baru sempat saya tonton kini. Glass Onion yang ditayangkan di Netflix adalah sekuel dari Knives Out (2019) yang kembali menghadirkan sosok detektif ternama, Benoit Blanc. Film yang disutradarai dan ditulis oleh Rian Johnson ini memiliki latar di awal masa pandemi, tepatnya pada tahun 2020 lalu. Secara keseluruhan, dibanding film pertamanya, cerita dan misteri yang disajikan tidak lebih baik. Namun, sebagai sebuah film misteri, Glass Onion tetaplah dapat dinikmati sejak menit-menit awalnya.
Another great detective movie after Murder on the Orient Express (2017), but quite fun to follow.
After watched Murder on the Orient Express two years ago, I’m so glad to be able to watch another detective movie this year. Knives Out narrates the investigation of a suicide of a famous novel writer. The detective that investigated the case found that the case could be a murder case. It made the detective involved in a thrilling situation as shown on the trailer. Will the whole movie be another thrilling mystery movie too?
In his 85th birthday, a crime novelist Harlan Thrombey invited his family to his party. In the following morning Harlan was found dead. His family members believe that Harlan committed suicide until the next week when a private detective, Benoit Blanc recalled the family to investigate the suicide case. Blanc was hired by an unknown figure to reveal the truth behind Harlan’s death. When he interrogated the family members, he found out that some of them has motive to murder Harlan. In addition, he able to deduce the lie parts said by them. Know that the family can fake their story, Blanc met Harlan’s nurse, Marta Cabrera to confirm his deductions and asked honest information from her since Marta can’t lie. Marta has a weird nature that causes her to vomit after telling a lie. Later, Blanc asked more from Marta to find out what really happened to Harlan, also who hired him to the case.
Ana De Armas as Marta got an important role in this movie. She knows what really happened to Harlan because she is the main suspect in the case. Here we’d see her tried to conceal evidences of her involvement, gave true but incomplete information to avoid vomiting, which sometimes done in a funny way. Chris Evans as Ransom also a show stealer who becomes the most resent member of Thrombey family. We won’t see Captain America’s image on him. Both Marta and Ransom have strong characters throughout the movie.
The investigation scenes done by Blanc is brought in a light but serious way. Here Blanc is an energetic figure who can carry the funny situation without being silly. The Thrombeys’ interactions also often made me laugh, emphasize the comedy aspect in this movie. Some of them like to discuss politics and have different political views. The topic they were talking became more interesting when they involves Marta who is an immigrant from South America. It reveals the issue that there are still Americans who dislike and disrespect immigrants like Marta. In addition, the identity of Marta’s family as immigrants is made convincingly with showing the family sometime speak in Latin.
Entering the second act, we’d think that the case is no longer interesting because the cause of Harlan’s death has been given already. However the story continued with a not simple plot. Mixed with some thrilling plots, the story continues with Blanc revealing what connects the truth he gathered before. He even discovered what Ana didn’t know from the case and revealed who really wanted to see Harlan’s death. He deducted everything accurately, despite looked have been fouled before. In the end, he also revealed why he wanted to involve Ana during the investigation due to a tiny evidence, made him recognized as a genius detective since the beginning.
As a mystery movie, the investigation plot in Knives Out is fun to follow. Ana De Armas made a decent performance which makes me want to see her next performance. Even though the revealed truth in the movie is kinda predictable, Ana’s performance still makes me want to give 8 of 10 score for the movie.
